🏛️ ANCIENT HERITAGE
Historical records indicate that Chokkad and neighboring villages, including Karuvarakundu, have been associated with iron mining since ancient times. Families engaged in iron smelting were locally known as “Arippanikkar.” Nearly 2,000 years ago, swords, utensils, and other iron products manufactured in this region were reportedly exported to Egypt, Turkey, Rome, and Damascus.
🌾 AGRICULTURAL PROSPERITY
Situated in the fertile agricultural belt of Malappuram District, Chokkad is characterized by its hilly terrain and undulating landscape. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with major crops including rubber, coconut, arecanut, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, clove, banana, coffee, vegetables, tapioca, cashew, yam, colocasia, and medicinal plants.
⚔️ LAND OF STRUGGLES
The village bears witness to the military campaigns of Tipu Sultan and has a long history of resistance against feudal oppression. Farmers endured severe hardships under exploitative landlord systems until social movements and organized struggles emerged to challenge injustice.
🔥 ROLE IN THE MALABAR REBELLION
Chokkad and its surrounding areas played a significant role in the 1921 Malabar Rebellion. Regions such as Vellayur, Manjappetty, Kallamoola, Pullankode, Chokkad, and Kalikavu became important centers of the uprising. The area also witnessed numerous labor movements, peasant struggles, and social reform campaigns.
🕌 KHILAFAT MOVEMENT & FREEDOM STRUGGLE
The Khilafat Movement gained considerable support in this region through the efforts of leaders like Muhammad Abdurahiman Sahib and Moidu Moulavi. Following the events at Tirurangadi in August 1921, anti-colonial sentiments intensified, leading to attacks on colonial institutions and widespread participation in the freedom movement.
Notable leaders associated with the region include Variyamkunnath Kunjahammed Haji and freedom fighter Chaluvalli Alavi Sahib, who was later honored with the Tamra Patra award.
🏭 ECONOMY & INDUSTRY
Rubber-based industries form an important part of Chokkad’s economy. Pullamkode Estate and the Chokkad Rubber Milk Society are among the key contributors to this sector. Traditional industries such as Ayurvedic medicine production also continue to thrive.
🎓 EDUCATION
The Panchayat has a well-developed educational infrastructure comprising 12 government schools, including Higher Secondary Schools, High Schools, Upper Primary Schools, and Lower Primary Schools, serving the educational needs of the community.
🛣️ TRANSPORT & COMMERCE
Road transport is the primary mode of connectivity in the region. The Iringattiri–Calvary Mount Road is one of the Panchayat’s major rural roads. Chokkad, Kallamoola, Udarampoyil, Srambikkallu, Pullamkode, and Maliyekkal serve as the principal commercial centers.
🤝 COMMUNAL HARMONY
Chokkad is home to people of different faiths living together in harmony. Muslims form the majority population, while Hindus and Christians also constitute significant communities. Mosques, temples, and churches located throughout the Panchayat stand as symbols of its enduring tradition of religious coexistence.
